Toy Beads Coated With Date Rape Drug to Result in Hefty Fine
October 27, 2011 | By John Feroleto
Aqua Dots toy beads were recalled as they were coated with a chemical that, when ingested, can metabolize into the “date-rape” drug gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB) which can cause unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, coma and death.
The consumer product safety commission is expected to accept a $1.3 million settlement to close the case. It is alleged the importer, Spin Master knowingly sold a banned hazardous substance.
Confidential sources report Spin Master will agree to the settlement tomorrow, but will deny allegations that it knowingly violated the law.
A number of children became sick when putting the beads in their mouth. Approximately 4 million of the toys were recalled four years ago, but it took this much time bring the outstanding charges to a conclusion. As a lawyer handling defective product cases it never ceases to amaze me that dangerous products keep being put on the market and needlessly hurting people.
"I think John is the tops! He always treated me like a mother. He took a while to get everything in order and he got it all done. He handled an impossible case, just let me put it that way."
