Winter Driving Safety

February 11, 2013

Winter is back with a vengeance as winter storm “Nemo” coats the east coast in a beautiful blanket of white. Many of us enjoy winter sports such as skiing and snowshoeing and welcome the snow.

But, let’s not forget the more serious aspects of winter in Buffalo; shoveling, snow blowing, and most importantly driving. While having fun is certainly important, take care to properly maintain stairs, sidewalks and driveways to avoid slip and falls. Proper maintenance includes shoveling sidewalks and steps and putting down salt.

As to driving in the snow:

  1. Be sure to clear the snow and ice off of your entire vehicle before taking off; this allows you to see better and allows other motorists to see you.
  2. Reduce your speed; leave for your destination ten to fifteen minutes early if the weather is bad.
  3. Avoid sudden actions; accelerate, brake, and turn more slowly to avoid slipping and sliding.
  4. Check your car emergency kit. Or if you don’t have one – make one. Make sure you have at the very least: a blanket, water, snacks, flashlight, batteries, gloves, boots, jumper cables and road flares.

As British writer Edith Sitwell once penned, “winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” However, should you feel the need to venture out into this winter wonderland, please take care of yourself and be mindful of others.
