Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Grows

June 5, 2012

For decades concussions and other traumatic brain injuries have been a huge problem in professional and amateur sports. Management and school administrations are finally recognizing the seriousness of brain injury. As injury attorneys we have represented people with brain injuries for years and understand they are complex and not easily understood.

Today’s Buffalo News includes a good article on concussions in sports. It discusses some of the problems caused by head trauma such as memory loss, concentration lapses, sleep problems, anger and depression. More than 80 former Buffalo Bills players are involved in lawsuits against the NFL. Ex-Bill Cookie Gilchrist and ex-Sabre Rick Martin were diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is caused by repeated concussions .

Qualified doctors will tell you that personality change is not unusual after a brain injury. The more the public, including school administrators become aware of traumatic brain injury, the more we can prevent it. And that’s a good thing.
