Tips about car insurance – How much do you need?

January 3, 2013

Most of us do not give much thought to our car insurance. It is just another bill to pay. Do you even know what you are paying for? It is better to find out now, before you need it. In New York owners of cars are required to carry a minimum of $25,000/$50,000 in liability insurance. Most of us sign up for this minimum and call it a day. Please consider adding Supplemental Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (SUM/UM) to your policy. The minimum is not enough to protect you.

Suppose you are involved in a car crash and you get seriously hurt and end up missing work, have a ton of medical treatment and perhaps injuries that will last a lifetime, such injuries could be valued at perhaps $500,000.00. If the car that crashed into you only had the above required minimum insurance of $25/50, the most you could recover from the other driver is $25,000.00. This is not a lot when you are suffering a serious injury. However, if you have Supplemental Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage on your own car insurance you can turn to your own insurance company to recover money (damages). In short, the extra coverage protects YOU. The cost is not a lot and it is offered in varying amounts of coverage. Call your agent or insurance company today to ask about SUM/UM coverage.

No one ever believes they will be involved in a car crash, let alone be seriously injured, however, people loose their lives and way of life because of injuries every day. We can’t control other drivers, but we can at least make sure we have insurance policies in place. As a trial attorney in Buffalo, NY I see too many people who have inadequate insurance, not enough to protect themselves and their families. Sadly, too many people learn about their inadequate insurance only after they need to rely on it, after they are hurt. Please do not let this happen to you.

If you are injured in a crash, do not face the insurance companies alone. Call Feroleto Law. Your job is to treat for your injuries and work on recovery, our job is to take on the insurance company for you.
