Quiz: How Many Safety Violations When New York State Troopers Check 833 Trucks?

May 30, 2014

101 trucks were immediately taken off the road during a recent road check of commercial vehicles on the Southern Tier Expressway May 11-14. The state troopers conducted with 833 inspections. There were 1306 violations. As a personal injury attorney, I can tell you most truck accidents and bus accidents are preventable.

45 drivers were taken off the road for severe safety violations, eight for having improper drivers license or no license at all, 28 exceeded legal hours, four were medically unqualified to drive at all. The road check was performed in two counties only, Tioga County in Steuben County along Interstate 86 and state Route 17.

The fact is, when a dangerous driver or trucking company allows dangerous trucks, unlicensed or unqualified drivers on the road with big rigs, the company is putting us all in jeopardy. If they are financially penalized enough times, most will change their ways. There are plenty of trucking companies with good safety records. The dangerous companies should pay when they harm members of the public who are using our roads. Have a safe weekend.
