Peace Bridge Truck Inspections May Speed Up

January 1, 2013

Peace Bridge truck inspections should speed up. Too often, truck traffic backs up on the QEW or New York State Thruway. In addition to causing delays, it has caused many rear and car crashes and truck accidents.

Peace bridge officials seek to spend tens of millions of dollars to widen the bridge approach to the US Plaza and build in on their paths ramp to the I-190 section of the New York State Thruway. A pilot project will likely allow American personnel to inspect US bound trucks in Fort Erie, Ontario to improve Peace Bridge traffic flow. The project could begin in late summer.

Nine of every 10 trucks crossing the Peace Bridge into the US are released after their initial inspection. 10% have a secondary inspection. The secondary inspections can clog up the cramped US Plaza. Better traffic flow should help increase truck traffic, as idle waiting times costly to truckers and trucking companies.
