Groundhog Day-Another Mega bus crash

August 3, 2012

Today the NHTSA reported it will work with local officials to determine safety factors in the Illinois bus crash that killed one and injured nearly 40 passengers. there have been a number of fatal bus crashes recently including several in New York State

Your odds of getting injured are seven times greater if you ride a double-decker bus, compared to a standard over the road bus.

Statements that the bus was recently inspected should not take away from the fact that a tire blew, contributing to the tremendous impact into a bridge support on I-55 in Illinois. What the inspection consisted of his unknown at this time. I would be very surprised if there was more than a perfunctory inspection of the tire.

As an attorney that handles a truck accident and bus accident cases, I am familiar with the pre-trip and post-trip inspections required. In addition there should be specific inspections of the tires. In a case involving a wheel lost on commercial vehicle i was shocked at the limited knowledge of tire condition and inflation by those who routinely inspected and work on commercial vehicles and tires. Let’s hope the cause of this deadly crash is determined and used to make the roads are made safer.
