46 Bus Companies Shut Down

October 25, 2011

The Department of transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration shut down 46 motor coach companies following surprise bus inspections this year.

Ann Ferro, of the FMCSA reported this at the annual meeting of the Bus Association of New York, an industry group. This comes in the wake of a string of horrific bus crashes nationwide and in New York State such as bus crashes near New York City, and upstate New York involving a Niagara Falls New York bus company.

The FMCSA will present a study on driver fatigue in December. Driver fatigue is involved in many bus and truck crashes. Some estimate more than one quarter of truck and bus drivers suffer from sleep apnea, a major cause of fatigue and a cause of bus and truck wrecks. We will keep you posted.
