Tragedies Happen at Nursing Homes Too Often
Oversight of nursing home operations is a needed service because when some facilities get a large number of complaints, it alerts regulators to do regular inspections of the nursing home. A tragic example happened when a 78-year-old resident fell out of an open window and remained there until she was found the next morning. It was a very cold February night and by the time she was found, she had died. She was a resident at Safire Northtowns in Tonawanda.
Not only was her window improperly secured, because it should have opened no more than 6 inches, the staff did not check in on her through the night. This was not the only time someone at the facility had been harmed as a result of staff action or inaction. The home has so many violations of nursing home safety practices that it is among the most penalized in the state since 2016.
